  • IALL notes with sadness the passing of Professor Igor Kavass on April 6, 2008. As many of you know, Igor was the President of IALL from1976-83. Arno Liivak, a former IALL Treasurer and editor of IJLI, commented that “IALL as a true international association would not have occurred without someone of Igor’s personality and class.” Igor spoke fluently Spanish, Russian, German, English, and Latvian, and knew French and other languages. He had a vision of what an organization might do, drawing on his own international background and cross-cultural experiences, from Australia to the United States and his European heritage. He could reach out to law librarians as well as to professors of law, substantive law experts, and people in government, to organize conferences and publish in IJLI. Igor could talk about any topic, he had a wide range of interests and he remained an inquisitive student all his life. In his later career, he was instrumental in bringing Ukraine to the WTO.
