as of August 2nd
The annual course in international law librarianship is the Association's main meeting and educational event of the year. There are three main themes this year:
- Legal implications of the enlarged EU
- EU legal developments relevant to libraries
- Italian legal information resources
Topics that will be discussed are: the European Constitution and its ratification, its impact on the functioning of the European Court of Justice, and the Ius Commune Europaeum. Of particular relevance to librarians is the EU copyright directive which will be addressed. Time will be dedicated to the rapid development of electronic Italian legal information resources.
Small group visits will be arranged to the most famous libraries of Florence,
including the Biblioteca Laurenziana, the Biblioteca Nazionale and the Uffizi Library.
The Association's annual meeting will be held at the European University Institute in the beautiful countryside close to San Domenico, a small village halfway between Florence and Fiesole, an Etruscan town in the hills north of Florence.
For tourist information on Florence and Fiesole, consult http://www.firenzeturismo.it/Categorie/ English_version62ba.html?IDCategoria=529.
San Domenico is a 20-minute drive from the centre of Florence and a 5 minute
drive from Fiesole. Bus no 7 runs from the main railway station in Florence
to Fiesole with a stop in San Domenico; taxis are also available at the railway station.
For a description of how to reach the EUI by bus or taxi,
consult http://www.iue.it/About/HowtoReach/.
San Domenico and Fiesole are located in hilly countryside and the roads can be uneven, winding and steep. A pair of comfortable shoes would be appropriate if you want to explore the surroundings. Please note some walking will be required to reach the venue from the nearest drop-off point and during the programme.
On Sunday, after a talk on local history, there will be a welcome reception and buffet on the Loggia of the Badia Fiesolana.
On Monday evening law bookseller Casalini will host a drinks reception at their nearby villa in San Domenico.
On Tuesday there will be an excursion to Siena. Participants will be welcomed by the Director of the University Library, learn about the history of the university and tour the Law Library and the Economics Library. In the afternoon there will be free time to visit the ancient centre of Siena, a compact pedestrian area which can easily be explored on foot. That evening, on the way back, there will be a wine tasting and dinner in the Casa Machiavelli, where Nicolò Machiavelli lived while he was banished from Florence. This is located in the Chianti area south of Florence.
The Annual reception and dinner on Wednesday evening will take place in the Villa Viviani and its gardens, in the hillside village of Settignano.
Registration for the 24th Annual Course was closed on August 3!

IALL is pleased to announce the availability of financial assistance to enable law librarians who are normally unable to benefit from Association activities to attend this year meeting. Deadline for applications is April 30th, 2005. Learn more...
The conference venue is the Badia Fiesolana, the main building of the European University Institute (EUI) in San Domenico. The EUI was founded in 1972 by the European Community Member States to provide advanced academic training to PhD students and to promote research at the highest level. It carries out research from a European perspective in history, law, economics, and political and social science.
The Badia Fiesolana is an ancient building, perched in the hills overlooking Florence. The conference sessions will take place in the main lecture theatre and the building also contains the Institute Library. Coffee, tea breaks and buffet lunches will be on the Loggia and in the courtyard of the Badia next to the Publishers' exhibition area.
Florence airport http://www.aeroporto.firenze.it has flights from a range of European cities. There is an airport bus to the city centre and taxis are available.
Pisa airport http://www.pisa-airport.com is 80 km away and Florence can be easily reached by train and bus. It is served by several budget airlines.
Visa information can be found at, for example, http://www.worldtravelguide.net/data/ita/ita040.asp but check this with your own authorities.
Delegates must book and arrange payment for their own accommodation direct with their chosen hotel. There is no official conference hotel. Rooms have been blockbooked in three small sized family hotels in Fiesole and in one residential educational college in the area of San Domenico close to the conference venue. There are few hotels nearby and the rooms held for conference delegates will be released by early July.
A number of hotels in Florence are offering their rooms at preferential rates but no rooms are being held at these hotels.
September is high season in and around Florence and delegates should book their accommodation at the earliest opportunity as availability cannot be guaranteed.
For all information on the hotels and a map of the area, please consult the Hotel Information Sheet.
